Introduction to Imago Theory and Skills

A Three Hour Presentation by Herb Tannenbaum, PH.D

Imago uses the intra-psychic phenomenon of the repetition compulsion to help couples learn to cooperate with each other’s unconscious agenda for repair rather than having on-going experiences of re-wounding which promote defensive behavior and leave couples stuck in power struggles which lead to ruptures in the attachment. The lecture will identify, explore and deepen the theoretical constructs of Imago Relationship Therapy, introduce the skills of Imago Therapy and discuss the paradigm shift of Imago which makes the relationship the primary focus of treatment and the individual the variable.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the basic theory and skills of Imago Relationship Therapy
• Identify and explain the connection between character structure and childhood wounds
• Define the components of the Imago that the psyche is looking for in a partner
• Identify the components of the power struggle in adult love relationships
• List 4 to 5 skills of Imago Relationship Therapy associated with creating a
conscious relationship.
